Notes

"HISTORICALLY SYMBOLIC OF bondage, entanglement, and eternity, some of these patterns are related to the mazelike knots of Celtic art, others to the intertwining lines of the Gothic style. They may strike a nautical note or, more commonly, make a trompe-l'oeil reference to the accessories and ornaments of clothing itself. Technically, these forms offer the designer a clever way to work out a repeat pattern, for they explicitly tie together the shapes that recur."
